Gigabyte Communications, the subsidiary, has announced that they have changed from making GSmart branded Windows Mobile phones to ODM with Android as an additional operating system.

Though the U.S. may not be the place that we will see Gigabyte, we look forward to seeing what new products they might develop.

Lenovo: 100,000 LePhone Units Sold in June

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010 In Blog, Featured Products / No Comments

    Daily Mobile Industry Snippets!

    Lenovo LePhones Units

Lenovo, a new manufacturer in the smartphone market, has sold 100,000 units in about a month. This is quite an achievement, considering the fact that the number of units sold is about the same number of iPhones sold when it was launched in China. Also, Lenovo is expecting to sell 1 million units by the end of the year.

Lenovo wants to make their smartphone popular in China first, before starting to sell it overseas. The smartphone market  may be a major factor in saving their profits from declining. A year ago, Lenovo suffered a $16 million loss, but now it has reportedly gained $54 million.

Android to Appear on Cheap Smartphones in China

Monday, August 23rd, 2010 In Blog / No Comments

    Daily Mobile Industry Snippets!

    Chinavasion

Chinavasion, one of the leading sellers of cheap Chinese electronics, says that they will soon have cheap phones running some of the smartphone OSes.  These will include phones running Symbian OS, Android, and Windows CE.

The operating system that many of these cheap phones had in common was called Nucleus RTOS.  Ms. Li states, “The Nucleus RTOS is a very capable OS but it doesn’t have the same potential that Windows, or Android or Symbian has.  This could potentially be the most exciting development in the cheap mobile phone sector in years.”

She continues, “Cheap mobile buyers can now get a mobile offices for the price of a cheap China phone.”

It is unclear why this announcement comes now, as Symbian has been open-source and available since April 2009.  Android has been around since the release of the G1 in October 2008.

Chinavasion currently has four Androids available:  Robot (2.8 inch resistive screen, Android 1.5), Excalibur (3G, 3.2 inch screen, Android 2.1), Cyborg (3G, 3.2 inch resistive screen, Android 1.6), and Prodigy (Quadband GSM, 3G, 3.2 capacitive screen, Android 1.6).

    Android OS: Honeycomb After Gingerbread?

Friday, August 20th, 2010 In Blog / No Comments

    Daily Mobile Industry Snippets!

    Android Logo

There has been rumors that the next Android OS version after Gingerbread will be called Honeycomb. So far, Google has named every version as a dessert, mainly the Cupcake (1.5), Donut (1.6), Eclair (2.1), Froyo (2.2), and the upcoming Android 3.0 Gingerbread. Now, according to TechRadar, the new version will be called Honeycomb.

If these sources are legit, Honeycomb may be an incremental upgrade from Android 3.0 (Gingerbread), just like how Android 2.2 (Froyo) was to Android 2.1 (Eclair). This means that Android Honeycomb will probably be Android 3.1 or Android 3.2. Further details of this upgrade are still  not known.

Android 3.0 Gingerbread, which is rumored as a tablet-friendly version, will be due out by early 2011 or sooner. Features are confirmed to include WebM video playback support and improved copy–paste functionalities.

    T-Mobile Announces The G2, First HSPA+ Device

Thursday, August 19th, 2010 In Blog, Featured Products / No Comments

    Daily Mobile Industry Snippets!

    T-Mobile-G2

After so much speculation, T-Mobile has finally announced the arrival of the G2 by sending a short press release to the media and updating their HSPA+ handset teaser site. Details about the G2 with Google are still incomplete but it is more than we had before.

The G2 is a successor to the G1 launched about two years ago. It will be a Google experience phone, implying that it will host a stock version of Android 2.2. Another thing we can expect from this device is that it will be manufactured by HTC. Perhaps we can see this device at the upcoming press conference, September 15th.

The device will house a Qualcomm MSM7230, which has the same Scorpion CPU as previously commercialized in the Snapdragon QSD8x50 chipset found in other HTC phones and it has a clock speed of 800 MHz to 1 GHz. T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network supports speeds up to 21 Mbps, and this device has a theoretical peak capability of 14.4 Mbps. The HSPA+ network will deliver 4G-like speeds to 185 million people this year.
