The Droid Incredible will be receiving the Android 2.2 Froyo update starting next Wednesday, August 18.
Sources have stated that Verizon team members already have Froyo installed on their Droid Incredibles. Now the update is essentially ready for launch. Recently, Froyo has been making its way onto some of the most popular Android phones, such as the HTC EVO 4G, the Motorola Droid, and Google’s Nexus One.
Froyo brings Flash 10.1, faster processing speeds, USB tethering and Wi-Fi hotspot functionality to the Android mobile OS. Also, Google has added new cloud sync functionality into Android 2.2 with the launch of Chrome to Phone.

The NPD Group, one of the largest market research companies in the United States, has reported that Android smartphones has outsold the BlackBerry in sales for Q2 2010. Android accounted for 33 percent of all smartphones purchased in Q2, ahead of RIM (28 percent) and Apple (22 percent).
The top 5 Android phones sold in the second quarter in the US were:
It’s not surprising that the Motorola Droid is at the top of that list. Especially with all those publicity and Droid commercials being pumped out every few weeks.
Let’s see if RIM’s new marketing campaign and the launch of BlackBerry 6 will help them with sales in Q3.

The results are here again. Data collected during two weeks ending on 2 Aug 2010 shows that Eclair has grown to cover 59.7 percent of the Android version pie and is still the most dominant. Eclair covered a 55.5 percent of the pie previously.
With Android 2.2 Froyo’s share increasing from 3.3 percent to 4.5 percent now, results should show a change of pace next month. Popular devices like the HTC EVO, Motorola Droid, and the HTC Desire are all expected to be receiving a Froyo update this month, so we will most likely see a change in distribution next time.

Seems like Android 2.2 (Froyo) will be making its way to devices very soon. There is a claim that the Motorola Droid X, the HTC Droid Incredible, and the Motorola Droid will be receiving the Android 2.2 update at the same time next week. It is expected that both HTC and Motorola will release the Android 2.2 update at the same time and will start pushing out the update from August 6th. It’s expected to hit all of these devices by August 15th.

After a year since its release, the Motorola Droid is still the most popular Android phone on the market despite stiff competition from other models. The Droid has 21 percent of the Android Market as of May, followed by the HTC Hero with 16 percent and the HTC Magic with 10 percent.
There are lots of strong challengers that weren’t released before this study, including the HTC EVO 4G, the Droid 2 and the Droid X. However, despite holding the number one individual spot, Motorola is still second place in the Android Market with 30 percent in total. HTC is the one with the highest percentage of 53 percent overall.

The free Adobe Reader app is the newest addition to the Android market. It requires Android 2.1 or above and is supported on the following Android devices:
1) Motorola Droid
2) Motorola Milestone
3) Google Nexus One
For other untested Android devices, it is expected that they also run the application just fine. The Adobe Reader for Android offers multi-touch gestures, like pinch-and-zoom, as well as double-tap-zoom, flick-scrolling and panning. There is also an additional “reflow” mode, which will take text-heavy documents with wide margins, and automatically wrap the content for easy viewing on smaller screens.

Flurry, an mobile app analytics firm estimates that while Apple sold 1 million iPhone devices in its first 74 days of availability on the market, the Motorola Droid actually shipped 1.05million devices during that timespan. In comparison, Nexus One’s sales lags behind, having sold only an estimated 135,000 phones in the 74 days.
Google launched the Nexus One phone, which it developed with handset manufacturer HTC, in January, marking the first time the giant Internet search company had sold a hardware device directly to consumers. But the Nexus One, unlike the iPhone or the Droid, can only be purchased on the Web and is not available at retail stores. Google has also advertised the phone exclusively online, foregoing the high-profile television ad campaigns of the iPhone and the Droid.
Flurry reaches its conclusions through applications using its solution for analytics reporting. Because applications embedded with Flurry are said to have been downloaded to over 80% of all iPhone OS and Android devices, the company claims it can make reliable estimates about total handset sales.

Apple is working on implementing multitasking support — the ability to run more than one app at once — for the iPhone’s operating system this summer, according to Apple Insider. It’s said to be a major new feature in the next version of the iPhone’s OS, version 4.o. If true, that will make it perhaps the most important OS upgrade for the platform yet.
While the current iPhone software is capable of multi-tasking, the feature is only accessible on ‘jailbroken’ handsets in which the device’s security controls have been modified. The lack of multi-tasking on the iPhone has become a selling point for competing devices, such as the Motorola Droid.

RIM says it is making adjustments to better compete with other smartphones like the Droid and Apple’s iPhone. They are making necessary changes to keep up with rival smartphone manufacturers, as the company continues to look for new ways to increase the number of apps it offers.
The dominant smartphone maker now has several anticipated phones in the coming months, which will help it compete against Apple, Motorola, Samsung, HTC, and others. Even more phone manufacturers are expected to test out the smartphone market this year, including Sony Ericsson, Nokia, and other companies that must evolve to meet changing consumer needs.
